January 08, 2002 :: "What happened last night?"

OK the Auto Show images have been posted.They can be found here. I hit three parties last night:

  1. First was the Center for Creative Studies bash [DAMAGE: one glass of cabernet; a plate of sushi, shmoozing]
  2. Then on to the Chrysler party at the Firehouse, which was a real fire station that Chrysler converted into a bar for a week. You’d swear it was a bar that had been there for years and not a working station. I met Kwamé Kilpatrick, Detroit’s new mayor, and Red Wings’ Darrin McCarty. [DAMAGE: four pints of Guinness; shmoozing] I learned one thing. In a room packed full of overpaid designers, the Germans are easily spotted. They all look like 70s porn stars. All male with handlebar moustaches, semi-mullets or silver ponytails. The American designers wear all-black and have closely cropped hair and black, geek glasses.
  3. On to VW’s 70s disco party at Union Street. Oops. Whaddya mean we need invitations? We have media passes! Not to worry: VW had several other parties going on in the D. [DAMAGE: a wasted trip]
  4. Comerica Park was another VW shindig. They had two large ice sculptures as you entered the lobby. It was here that I was introduced to a drink called the Cosmopolitan. They mixed these in shakers and then poured them across the ice scupture. The drink trickled through several ice tunnels this way and that, finally ending up, perfectly chilled in a martini glass. [DAMAGE: seven cosmopolitans; a plate of sautéed artichoke hearts, shrimp cocktail, two games of pool, watching lasers on the ballpark, schmoozing]
Amazingly, I woke up on time and I have no headache. All this one day after recovering from a serious cold.

I know. Some day I will have to relax and have a life.

all that and no hangover? god, you're my hero.

You met Darren McCarty? I will always love him for what he did to Claude Lemieux on March 26, 1997. He may only have like 2 goals so far this year, but he will always be on my cool list for that. According to the Freep today, the Wings may be trading the man for Kasparitis, but of course, the Penguins most likely want more than Darren.

how on earth are you still living after 12 drinks?
guppy :: 08 January, 2002 03:43 PM

Those Ford girls are hot!!!!!! Did you meet them?
mofoD :: 08 January, 2002 03:55 PM

The cold germs and the alcohol must have canceled each other out. At least, that explanation would make you feel least bad. :)

That's cool you met Darren.
I agree with Adam- he'll be
loved just for pummeling Lemieux.

Sounds like you had an absolute ball working! Damn, I need a job like that. lol

You only now discovered the cosmo! And seven of them?!!! Must have been terribly diluted by the time they trickled down...usually 2-3 will put someone with a reasonable tolerance under the table. Once in awhile I go watch jazz at the Good Life in Boston and they shut me off after 2 cosmos (and I DO have a high tolerance), but they are so potent. :) Every place makes them differently so finding the best ones is always a treat.

Dang...I miss the days when I had a real job, marketing in high-tech, partying it up at conferences and private parties like that. *you feel my waves of jealousy reach out and consume you*

yeah, darren is very cool, seems like a real nice guy. he could be an ass, though, and i'd still love him for the lemieux fight.
