November 26, 2001 :: "First, there is an A-List, then there is no A-List, then there is..."

Kevin Fox. Such a smart and observant fellow is he. A simple related:www.metafilter.com/ search on Google led him to a shocking discovery: the only sites related to Metafilter are the alleged A-List! [Scary organ music swells in background]

See for yourself. Here’s the results: Metafilter, BLOGGER, kottke.org, Jeffrey Zeldman Presents:, CamWorld, Dave Winer's Scripting News Weblog, Plastic, what's in rebecca's pocket?, Greymatter, Robot Wisdom Weblog, jish.nu, k10k, Boing Boing, nothing, and lots of it, Weblogs.Com, Arts & Letters Daily, kuro5hin.org, caterina.net, explodingdog, memepool.com and The Web Standards Project.

It’s a joke people relax. There is no A-List... There is no A-List... There is no A-List...

He said. She said. There’s 31 Comments

sonnuva... (slaps head)

So it's not about who you know or who links you - you just have to be related to Metafilter. Amazing. I wonder if marrying into the family is a possibility...
Emily :: 26 November, 2001 04:25 PM

i hear sleeping with kottke helps. ;-p
guppy :: 26 November, 2001 04:34 PM

oh. see i thought it took to be on the a-list is be be *so good* (and clearly quite *personable*)that you're unemployable.
jocelyn :: 26 November, 2001 04:50 PM

Hey! I'm unemployable! Why aren't I on the A-List?
Phineas :: 26 November, 2001 04:52 PM

you're an artist phineas. everyone knows a-listers are programmers, which makes them authorities on, well... everything. also you're interesting.
jocelyn :: 26 November, 2001 04:54 PM

Interesting? You take that back! I'm as boring as any A-Lister there ever was!
Phineas :: 26 November, 2001 04:56 PM

You can't be too boring, if you already have your own Phan site.
jima :: 26 November, 2001 05:21 PM

And how fair is it that k10k shows up on that list, and they're on hiatus until January? At the very least, Phineas could have their spot until then....
jima :: 26 November, 2001 05:34 PM

And how the Hell did Plastic get on there? Oh wait, that fits neatly into Jocelyn’s Theory of Boring Material. I’m not sure if I’m buying that theory though. Zeldman, Caterina, Exploding Dog and Rebecca never bore me.
Davezilla :: 26 November, 2001 06:40 PM

Hey, programmers aren't A-Listers, now useability experts are another story. We just write code, who cares if it's useable or not.
e :: 26 November, 2001 07:50 PM

What about usability experts who also code? ;-)
Kevin :: 26 November, 2001 08:05 PM

Is there a D-list? And if so, where do I apply?
michele :: 26 November, 2001 08:22 PM

What about usability coders that are also backup dancers for Britney Spears?
Amy Allen :: 26 November, 2001 08:42 PM

Finally, a definitive A-list and all the reasons I will never be on it:

1: Lack of any coherent exciting design.

2: Lacklustre content.

3: I use words like "lacklustre".

4: I like meaty calves.
TC :: 27 November, 2001 01:16 AM

There's no D-list, but there's a B Team now. ;-)
e :: 27 November, 2001 04:26 AM

Would those meaty calves be human or bovine?
Davezilla :: 27 November, 2001 07:51 AM

There is also a recently established Zee List cause some of us kids don't want to hang with the in crowd.
D :: 27 November, 2001 08:02 AM

Hmmm. Tough choice. Depends on my mood, I suppose.
TC :: 27 November, 2001 08:27 AM

Is there any chance that the programmers on the A-List help program the A-List search engine (if there is such a thing) so that they end up back on it, and artists and others that don't code can't get on it because they can't code?

Also, is there any chance that what I've said is decipherable? I wonder what would happen if you put it through an auto-translater?

By the way, I decided to kill off my website, and this is just another reason why (not that I always wanted to be A-List, of course). Like Dave always says, dead sites get more traffic than live ones, so here it is: www.christopherwalker.co.uk
Chris :: 27 November, 2001 08:43 AM

So, being on the "A" list and fiftycents will get you a cup of coffee? Hmmm...
rks :: 27 November, 2001 08:55 AM

Huh. I must be like Z list cause the only one I've ever heard of and visted was Jish. :o)
hilary :: 27 November, 2001 10:07 AM

Oh, well, and greymatter, but that doesn't count.
hilary :: 27 November, 2001 10:08 AM

Not even Zeldman?
Davezilla :: 27 November, 2001 10:14 AM

nope, not even Zeldman. I am so very un-hip.
hilary :: 27 November, 2001 04:07 PM

several of us outcast misfit weridos have started a zee list. or is it z list? some of them are calling it zed list (those canadians for instance). it's very disorganized. Hoopty has more info...
kd :: 27 November, 2001 07:58 PM

Tired of having your undies tied in a knot over blogging the "right way" and knowing just the "right" bloggers ? Well, the line forms to the middle------be a ZEE LISTEr. No rules. No rights. No wrongs. Circles, squares, triangles, and linear equations join together in the middle lane. Beep Beep!
othercheek :: 27 November, 2001 08:09 PM

oh, yeah, & Brooks has a great explanation of the A-list legend. also, it should be mentioned that the above noted othercheek started this all.

Apparently triple-posting is one of the rules of the Z list?
