October 08, 2001 :: "Chinese Muslim troops cross border help Taliban"

From DEBKA Political analysis:

Long Chinese convoys were carrying armed Chinese Muslim servicemen through northwest China into Afghanistan to support the Taliban militia prior to today's U.S. offensive, according to the intelligence sources of DEBKA-Net-Weekly.

The DEBKA sources report the troop strength of the Chinese columns at between 5,000 and 15,000. The first troops reportedly crossed the border Friday.
On an unrelated but interesting note, Chinese artisan Liang Shi-mian is busy trying to resurrect 2,000 year-old statues of Buddha that were destroyed by the Taliban.

I have serious doubts about the DEBKA "analysis". I would expect any such movement by China to be all over the front pages of most news sites, and I find no mention at CNN, ABC, CBS, or MSNBC. And on the home page of China's official Xinhua news agency (http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/index.htm), there are several stories about the conflict, including one about Jiang Zemin and Bush chatting on the phone. Considering its evident source, this "analysis" smacks of Christian fundamentalist apocalyptic wishful thinking.

Hmmm. Hard to believe that an Israeli-American intelligence news source could be considered “Christian Fundamentalist” and “apocalyptic,” but thanks for the insight.
