September 18, 2001 :: "Don’t read the readme"

According to Leia, a worm called W32.nimda.A@mm has been wreaking havoc on NT servers worldwide this morning. I am on a UNIX server, but I was experiencing slowdowns from domain name resolving issues. There is no known patch as of this writing.

The worm has an attachment called readme.eml. This is actually an .exe in disguise. It also throws a javascript on any .html files it sees that force the .eml to run. Nasty.

As you can see from the Internet Traffic Report, response times are getting a very low index. The orange box should, on a good day, show a number near 100. They are currently in the low 20s.

For more info from those with more technical chops than I, read these two slashdot posts:

Waaah!

This would explain why I can't get to my own site. I hate wanting to write about not being able to write, I feel so... web-dependant. Like an addiction...

At least I have you to read Davezilla.

It also opens your C:\ drive, and makes it a default shared directory. Very nice.

One possible solution is to download the IIS Lockdown from Microsoft, which basically makes your system secure by, ironically, shutting down IIS.
