July 22, 2001 :: "GreaterGood.com shuts down its sites"
One week away from the Blogathon and I need to find a new charity. The board of directors who runs The Hunger Site, one of the most successful online charities ever, decided this week to shut down.
A quick check of the site shows a sparse page with the message: “The Hunger Site is undergoing routine maintenance. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you!”
Other sites which are affected by this decision include:
He said. She said. There’s 9 Comments
guidestar.org - A search on the word "hunger" came up with 934 results. (If you're still interested in feeding people.)
A search for your local community returned 128 results. (Although, I think it would be best to not pick The Michigan US Amateur Confederation of Roller Skating. I could be wrong. Maybe they just need new stops for the fronts of their skates so they can hokey-pokey! Or perhaps they need a new vinyl copy of YMCA.)
If the decision to shut down the hunger site has lead to a loss of faith in humanity a search for your local area turned up 38 animal-related charities.
The advanced search is quite useful.

If you decide not to choose hunger as another charity, I suggest the "Make A Wish Foundation". I think it's a great charity, and was going to use it as my choice of charity for my blog, but nobody bothered to sponsor me, so I am going to go to sleep on the 24th. (Awwwww....)

Consider the Heifer Project (http://www.heifer.org/). They give livestock and training to poor families, with the agreement that the family must pass along some of the offspring from the livestock to another poor family. Truly 'the gift that keeps on giving.'

It never hurts to ask...maybe you'd consider the charity I chose for the blogathon? It's http://wwww.casa-alianza.org, a reknowned organization dedicated to helping children in Latin America. One of its aims is to feed them, and after having lived in Mexico for many years I saw too many hungry children up close. It's a worthy charity.

the humane society of dallas, the only non-kill facility here, is in danger of closing. they need $5K/mo. and have only been receiving $1K/mo.

Wow Josh. Heifers huh. And me a vegetarian. :^p
I have decided to go with America’s Second Harvest, another hunger site that deals strictly with hunger within the US and they promise to donate 99.3% of the proceeds toward the charity. [Some only donate 10%.]

You probably have enough suggestions, but my choice would be http://www.rawa.org/ - afghan women fighting for some basic dignity under the taliban (basic dignity like being allowed to work, go to school, or walk outside unaccompanied).
They *are* short on money, actually.
Here's a little "background research" by my beloved snopes:
