July 12, 2001 :: "Foods I won’t eat"

This list is based solely on how bad these foods sound to me. If the very name illicits revulsion, then you’ll probably find them here. The recipes have been linked to. That way you’ll know I’m not making this stuff up. [With special assistance from Maggie, Leslie and Leia]

Actually, as a Scot, I can tell you that haggis mings. It mings like a mingy thing.

In a word... Gross.

What about Rocky Mountain Oysters? If I were male, I think I'd be a little unnerved by the thought of eating those. Even as a female it's a scary thought! By duchess :: July 12, 2001 07:47 AM EST
lady's fingers (or is that ladies fingers?) - name scares the heck out of me. also, frog's legs - ewwwwww. i rather like the sound of the word falafel though, rhymes with waffle, and those are mmm mmm good!

although you should probably ignore the above as I have had to turn in my Man-Card.
By bakiwop :: July 12, 2001 08:30 AM EST
If you don't like Rocky Mountain Oysters (and I have yet to meet someone who does) also stay away from Lamb fries, Calf fries in wine sauce, Butterflied Turkey Nuts.

Have the balls to say no to balls.

You're missing out on those snickerdoodles though; those things are great!
By Shiloah :: July 12, 2001 08:44 AM EST
Oh I know they are great. But can you truly say that word without feeling like a complete retard? I didn’t think so.

Fret not Bakiwop. You cannot lose your Man-Card over food [unless you eat nothing but salad and quiche] Only over fufu cocktails.

I forgot all about Rocky Mountain Oysters! I was going to add Hog Balls, a big delicacy in some Middle Eastern nations, but alas, I could find no recipes. By Davezilla :: July 12, 2001 10:39 AM EST
Cornish Pasties are excellent - as are oxtail soup and falafels.

However - don't even think about the red pickled pig's tails I came across in Tobago - great vats of them, outside in 100F heat - the smell was, well ... baaaarffff!

Actually, where I come from, mock turtle soup is made with yummy boiled shrimp and that's about all. What scares me is actual turtle soup made with actual turtle meat (not sea turtle meat). They still make it down here in uncivilized Louisiana. By Sabrina :: July 12, 2001 11:42 AM EST
Um... I thought pasties were something else, not a food. *blush* By Jon :: July 12, 2001 11:52 AM EST
When I went to Ukraine a couple summers ago, I lived off borscht and buckwheat. The longest six weeks of my life, but it did wonders for my figure. By Julie :: July 12, 2001 12:51 PM EST
Possum ... the other white meat By Mike :: July 12, 2001 03:25 PM EST
Taste of Chicago had this one store with... (checks pamphlet)

Cajun alligator on a stick.
Wild boar ravioli with marinara.
Ostrich burger.
BBQ chicken wings.

No, I'm not making this up.

Shrimp Tempura is also a funny name, as are pierogi and "eku okuko." Bonus points to the beef momo.

Beef Momo? By Amy Allen :: July 12, 2001 07:46 PM EST
Sea urchin - blech! I know what part it is, too, which doesn't help. Borscht - well, anything that involves beets is pure evil. Beets are the devil-veggie, and must be avoided at all costs.

Elephant ears, by the way, sound like a lesser version of Beaver Tails.

have you ever seen pickled pigs' feet? they look like a lab specimen on display. as the cooking liquid cools, it gels. the feet ( which are composed of ankle bone and toenail with very little meat in between) are suspended in the pink jelly. By bobthecorgi :: July 12, 2001 08:47 PM EST
Yes. Beef momo. Don't ask me either - that's what was on the menu. The smell from that booth was so overpowering we just avoided it entirely... it was one of the few Taste booths without a giant throng of people in front of it. By nickd :: July 12, 2001 09:48 PM EST
You are missing out on some supertasty food.
Either that or I eat scary stuff and don't realize it.

I am a monster big fan of:
Oxtail Soup
Gnocchi
Pasties (hello! Polish yums!)
Bird's Nest Soup
Sea Urchin is good when cooked right as are Sea Cucumbers and sea snails. Falafel is ok as well.

Ya snob!

Now I'm hankering for a plate of sizzeling eel.
=D

Ooo.. I've also eaten pig's feet as well but they weren't pickled. More like pressed into sort of a something reminiscent of head cheese but not.

It's a Korean thing I guess.
Do I win for having eaten most of the stuff here that you find icky?

I won't eat brains haggis or blood sausage though. That will just ick me out.
By Min Jung Kim :: July 12, 2001 11:48 PM EST
what about spotted dick?

the name alone....

i haven't tried the pudding. who knows.. it MIGHT be good... but jeez...

Borscht, oxtail soup, muesli, nougat, sauerkraut, gnocchi and felafel are YUMMY. By andrea :: July 13, 2001 02:10 AM EST
WTF? Nobody uses the lungs in haggis when prepared correctly. Falafel is yummy - as you should know living in Detroit and all. By Charles :: July 13, 2001 05:02 AM EST
Beef jerky - eek, I just can't eat something that makes me think of college guys masturbating... By Rathicca :: July 13, 2001 07:46 AM EST
Gnocchi are cool. By Jon :: July 13, 2001 09:40 AM EST
i have to add hummis and polenta. i don't like either of them and the names alone remind me of puking sounds. blech... By the other michael :: July 13, 2001 01:23 PM EST
