Announcing a change to Davezilla
Fourteen years is a long time to run a website and this site has gone through many changes over the years. As my job changed, so have my priorities. I’d like to see the site head in a more positive, mature direction, so from now on, the main focus of the site will no long be humor, but instead some more uplifting, wholesome subjects closer to my heart like eBay auctions and Facebook apps. I hope you welcome the changes.

Come on Dave you pulled the web site shut down last year. Just change you site to the web site no longer available message for a day. That will get them going. Better yet post a screen shot of the BSOD so people think their computer crashed.

About time too…
Did anyone else notice that the “trunk” of the “elephant” (while the rest of the body of the elephant remains off-screen), resembles remarkably, for a non-jointed/tentacular affair, a human arm (that is, is equipped with a hand, wrist & bony-elbowed-joint)?
Regardless of the canned applause at the end of the video-clip, at no time did one actually ’see’ the entirety of the pachyderm during the “painting” of this picture- AND there has never been any (I repeat- ANY) other instance of an elephant painting something other than a rather impressionistic style version of something containing/concerning color (certainly not something involving a painting that involves connecting previously disconnected lines (front-&-back perspective of fore-&-back-limbs) and certainly not two-dimensional representations of 3-dimensional objects (without even the benefit of a mirror or a picture of an elephant in said appropriate pose).
While in no way would I choose to cast aspersions on our elephant brothers, I suggest you all take a closer look at the “trunk” for the afore-mentioned elbow/wrist/hand aspects and at the video for the fact that you never see the entire elephant.
Dave: I believe I speak for all/most of us that, when you used the word “wholesome” in connection with “this” column, we all manifested a giant sphincter-unclenching sigh of relief, knowing that we would NOT be forced to send our hordes of Jehovah-Witnesses, Sand-ninjas or companies of company-barbarians to pummel, torture, or slowly eviscerate one of our favorite maniacs.

I believe Dave just called us a name. That was totally uncalled for and rather hurtful. With that in mind, I think we should all band together to make this site the wholesome and uplifting place that Dave desires. I was quite ready to pronounce that elephant Starving Artist of the Month until it drew the flower. That flower was as big as its head! Clearly, the elephant has no sense of perspective.

I didn’t watch the video long enough to see that part, but maybe it was painting rafflesia. That might be as big as an elephant’s head :P

Regarding the elephant (if anyone cares): It was part of a Five documentary (a British station) special called “Extraordinary Animals”. Yes the elephant did indeed paint that portrait, as well as many others. However, it is a “taught” or “learned” drawing behavior, rather than a spontaneous artistic expression. The elephant has been taught a series of strokes to create the animal portrait. However, the elephant is indeed doing the painting, without human intervention. Still pretty cool.
